Accredited Children's Mental Health Centre

A 48-bed, Secure Residential Forensic Mental Health Facility for Ontario male and female youth who have significant mental health concerns * youth can be admitted to Syl Apps for assessment and treatment through three different avenues

Secure treatment - under the Child & Family Services Act (CFSA):
  • provides secure treatment to youth who are at significant risk to themselves or others
  • this program is a provincial resource and as such, youth are referred and screened and if appropriate are admitted through Family Court Orders from all regions of the province

Secure detention and custody - under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA):
  • provides assessment and treatment for YJ youth identified with significant mental health issues
  • this program is a provincial resource and referrals to the program come from other secure YJ facilities, through the Youth Justice Services Placement Co-ordination Unit only
  • Syl Apps is also the direct intake for secure YJ females for central region

Ontario Review Board (under the Criminal Code of Canada):
  • provides assessment and treatment to youth who are involved in the youth justice system who have been found not fit or not criminally responsible and are ordered to Syl Apps by the Ontario Review Board
  • Syl Apps is designated as a hospital for the purposes of the Ontario Review Board
  • assessment, treatment and rehabilitation interventions are based on the individual strengths and needs of each youth and whenever possible, are delivered in partnership with families or guardians, and community partners
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy is the primary treatment modality at SAYC
  • multi disciplinary treatment team consists of child and youth workers, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, family physicians, art and recreation therapists, teachers and managers
  • youth also access supports from other community partners and services
  • the Halton Board of Education operates an on-site section 23 school
  • licensed by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and accredited by Children's Mental Health Ontario (CMHO)
